Author and poet Maya Angelou has died at 86.

Local media has reported that Angelou was found by her caretaker on Wednesday morning in her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Reportedly, Angelou had been recently battling health problems.

The last tweet sent from her account was on May 23.

The award-winning poet and storyteller was best known for her memoir, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Her stories including themes about abuse, racial injustice and identity as a woman and a Black woman. Angelou was also known for civil rights activism and one of the first Black women to direct a film.

"Maya Angelou was a great woman, and for me, a very powerful black woman; a role model," Mayor of Philadelphia Michael A. Nutter said. "Her words, her literature, and her presence will never leave us.  My hope is that there will be a whole new wave of Maya Angelou fans created today and that school across America will take a moment to reflect and read some of her great work."

While Angelou has left the world, her voice is still read and heard through stories and video.

As Angelou wrote in "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," "Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning."
