Mexico is not a good country to work as a journalist, at least in terms of security. The recent murder of Mexican photographer Ruben Espinosa — found dead in an apartment in the Narvarte neighborhood of Mexico City — is sadly just one example of the violence journalists have to face in some parts of the globe.

Espinosa, who worked for Proceso Magazine, left the state of Veracruz due to the harassment he was suffering. He is just one of the seven journalists that have been killed in Mexico so far in 2015.

The terrorist attack that killed a journalist from French magazine Charlie Hebdo brought France's journalist death toll to eight, the highest worldwide this year.

According to Committee to Protect Journalists, 61 journalists were killed (motive confirmed) in 2014. Syria was the country where the most professionals lost their lives working — 17 in total — followed by Ukraine and Iraq with five journalists each.

Four people were killed while working in Somalia as well as Israel and the Occupied Territories. In countries like Brazil, Paraguay, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the 2014 death toll in each nation reached three. In the same period, two journalists were killed in Mexico and India.

In Guinea, South Africa, Philippines, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Libya, Central African Republic and Yemen, eight journalists lost their lives (one in each country).
