At the end of the day it depends on each individual; however, if you live in Panama a feeling of well-being is much more likely than for those who live in Afghanistan, ranked the country with the lowest well-being in the world, according to a Gallup-Healthways study.

The ranking is made according to Gallup-Healthways’ Global well-Being Index, which takes into account five elements: purpose, social, financial, community and physical. Data is collected from more than 146,000 interviews in 145 countries and areas around the world.

Panama is ranked the first for second year in a row; 53 percent of the residents considered themselves thriving in three or more elements. Costa Rica (2), Puerto Rico (3), Switzerland (4) and Belize (5) are next on the listt. 

The top 10 countries with the highest well-being are full of Spanish-speaking countries. Chile ranked 6, followed by Denmark (7), Guatemala (8), Austria (9) and Mexico (10).

On the opposite end of the list is Afghanistan, ranked with a 0 percent. The second place on the bottom 10 is Bhutan. Cameroon and Togo are ranked 3 and 4. The following countries on the ranking are Tunisia (5), Congo Kinshasa (6), Ivory Coast (7), Benin (8), Haití (9) and Ghana (10).

This study also ranked countries according to each of the five elements. Puerto Rico has the highest social well-being. Norway thrives in terms of financial well-being and people from Sri Lanka are the best example of community well-being. Panama leads both the purpose and the physical well-being list.

Afghanistan has the worst grades in three of the five elements: purpose, social and financial. Bhutan lacks  community and physical well-being.

The United States is not mentioned in any of the rankings.
