Some college students have to worry about the Freshman 15. Others worry about not eating at all.
Some college students have to worry about the Freshman 15. Others worry about not eating at all.
According to a new research published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, 59 percent of college students at a university in Oregon were considered as "food insecure" during the last school year, meaning they were unable to consistently eat nutritious foods. This makes college students four times more likely to be food insecure than the average American household in 2012.
The main problem causing the students food insecurity is that the food, particularly healthy food, costs more than they could afford. The research found that 62 percent of students could not to afford balanced meals in the last six months.
Lack of food can cause stress, depression, malnutrition, and poor academic performance.
