“Latinos’ sense of patriotism as Americans is robust, but has too often overlooked in our society,” is the premise of the documentary On Two Fronts: Latinos and Vietnam, a new  PBS project that aired on Tuesday nationwide.

Filmed on location throughout the Southwest and in Vietnam, the documentary centers around the memoirs of two siblings, Everett and Delia Alvarez, who stood on opposite sides of the Vietnam War, one as a POW and the other protesting at home.

The project is directed and produced by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Mylène Moreno, who wanted to tell the story of Latino veterans as a reminder of the significant role they played.

In communities where there were few alternatives to service, war impacted every household — especially amongst Latinos. “They were not reluctant to step up and do what their country was asking of them,” Moreno told The Orange County Register.

NBCNews reported that though Mexican American males of military age composed about 14 percent of the population in five Southwestern states, “they composed 18.2 to 19.4 percent of war casualties in those states.”

The documentary also launched a community engagement campaign focus on creating opportunities to understand and honor the military service by Latinos in the U.S. armed forces, and to celebrate Latino patriotism as distinctly American.

There will also be a series of screenings throughout the U.S. including a Philadelphia screening on Oct. 28 hosted by WHYY (150 N 6th Street) at 6 p.m.
