"The double life of Estela Carrillo" tells the story of an undocumented woman who arrives in California with her daughter and assumes a false identity to claim that she has legal documents to work in the country. Her dream is to reaching stardom in the banda world but her destiny takes her to be a teacher in Riverside, California where she is a witness of a school shooting, where she becomes a hero when she saves her students lives. Her citizenship status doesn't allow her to receive any recognition as she fears being deported.
The telenovela, whose main character enters the world of Mexican regional music after witnessing a crime, obtained good ratings during its broadcast in the southern neighbor, where it was aired on Televisa.
For David Zepeda, the male protagonist, although the telenovela touches on issues such as illegal immigration, drug trafficking and other crimes, the main issue is the strength of Latin women and the family values of people of Latin American origin.
