Climate change and ozone pollution due to global warming, may cause the world’s food crop supplies to decrease, according to a new study.
Ozone pollution, which is already known to cause breathing problems and harm air quality, increases as temperatures rise. Once the ozone has formed, it can travel long distances, and affect remote areas.
The study, published recently in the journal Nature Climate Change, evaluated the impact of climate change and ozone pollution on four of the world's primary food crops: wheat, rice, corn and soy.
Research showed that climate change is likely to reduce the crop’s supplies by at least 10 percent by 2050. The study also stated that the effects of ozone pollution and climate change vary by area and the type of crop.
