A delicious and wide ranging menu is not the only thing that should be highlighted from “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list. This year, 13 out of the 50 best restaurants in the world are focused on Latino cuisine — and 18 out of 100.

The winner this year was Spanish restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, owned by reknowned family trio, Jordi, Josep and Joan Roca. Their restaurant, located in Gerona (Spain), took first place on the list of the best restaurants in the world (last year they ranked second).

El Celler de Can Roca is followed by the Italian restaurant Oteria Franciscana, and then the Danish restaurant Noma.

Five Latin American countries

Spain is the Hispanic country with most restaurants on the list. Seven places made it into the ranking:  Mugaritz, owned by Andoni Luis Aduriz and located at Rentería (ranked 6); Asador Etxebarri, owned by Víctor Arguinzoniz, in Achondo (13); Restaurante Arzark, owned by Juan Mari Arzak,in San Sebastian (17); Azurmendi, owned by Eneko Atxa, in Larrabetzu (19); and Quique Dacosta Restaurante, owned by Quique Dacosta, in Denia (39).

Tickets, the restaurant of chef Albert Adría located in Barcelona, shared the 42nd spot with the only Chilean restaurant on  the list: Rodolfo Guzman´s restaurant Boragó. And there are three more Spanish restaurants in the extended list of 100 restaurants. Diverxo, ranked number 59; Martín Berasategui, 61; and Nerua, 68.

Peru is another successful Latin American countries in terms of cuisine. Three of their restaurants, all from Lima, are featured in the best restaurants ranking. The chosen are: Central, property of Virgilio Martínez, at number 4; Astriz y Gaston, owned by Gastón Acurio, ranked 14; and Restaurante Maido, created by Mitsuharu Tsumura, 44.

Mexico also has three restaurants in the top 50: Pujol, of chef Enrique Olvera, at number 16; Quntonil, owned by Jorge Vallejo, ranked 35; and Biko, property of Mikel Alonso and Bruno Oteiza, ranked 37.

Argentina does not have any restaurants in 'The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ list, but has one in the top 100 list. It is Tegui, located in Buenos Aires, and ranked 84 out of 100.

The United States did well too

Chefs in the United States do know how to cook and the best restaurant list is the proof. Six North American places are featured on the ranking — 15 appeared on the 100 list.

New York has the higher number of top restaurants, nine in total. Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park ranked 5; followed by Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin, at 18; Per Se, owned by Thomas Keller, scored at 40; and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, created by Dan Barber, which is number 49. At the bottom of the list are NoMad (67), Momofuku Ko (69), Daniel (80), Estela (90) and Masa (94).

“The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list also has places from Chicago — Grant Achatz’s Alinea (26) — and California: The French Laundry, owned by Petter Goossens and located in Yountville (50); Restaurant at Meadowood (St.Helena), ranked 72; and Manresa (Los Gatos), number 100 San Francisco has two, Saison (56) and Coi (75).
