Whites continue to dominate jobs in museums across the nation while minorities are underrepresented, according to a report by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Whites represent 72 percent of museum staff across the nation while minorities only represent 28 percent.

“As the American population is today 62 percent Non-Hispanic White, the overrepresentation of this group on museum staff may at first not seem as dramatic as one might have expected,” reads the report. “However, there is significant variation in demographic diversity across different types of museum employment.”

Among the higher ranking positions (curators, conservators, educators, and leadership), 84 percent of staff is White, 6 percent Asian, 4 percent Black, only 3 percent Latino, and 3 percent two or more races.
