Five Latinos among top 100 billionaires of 2015
Behold the bulk of the world's wealth in fewer than 2,000 people.
There are 1,826 billionaires in existence right now, according to Forbes’ annual roundup of the world’s top 10-figure fortunes.
In their overview, Forbes culls a few notable stats from the list. There are now 46 billionaires under the age of 40, including 24-year-old Snapchat creator Evan Spiegel. Mark Zuckerberg made the top 20 for the first time, and basketball legend Michael Jordan joined the 290 newcomers to the list.
Only 230 inherited their status as billionaires, while a hope-affirming 1,192 are self-made billionaires. Russia’s wealthiest elite lost more than any other country, going from 111 to 88 billionaires since last year.
More significantly, however, there is now a record-high number of female billionaires — 197 out of 1,826, up from 172 in 2014.
A few things Forbes didn’t point out:
Only 124 of the 1,826 persons on the list hold a net worth over $10 billion.
There are five Latinos in the top 100 billionaires, with a combined net worth of $182.7 billion. Two of these are among the top five richest people in the world.
2. Mexico’s Carlos Slim Helu, $77.1 billion
4. Spain’s Armancio Ortega, $64.5 billion
77. Mexico’s German Larrea Mota Valesco and family, $13.9 billion
82. Chile’s Iris Fontbana and family, $13.8 billion
85. Colombia’s Luis Carlos Sarmiento, $13.4 billion
