When it comes to energy, Americans want to have their cake and eat it, too.

In a recent Pew Research Survey, 60 percent of Americans said that developing alternative energy sources was more important than expanding oil and gas extraction. Yet, 56 percent of those surveyed also favored allowing more domestic mining and drilling offshore and on federal land.

Young people were more likely to support developing alternative energy, like nuclear, wind or solar. Nearly 75 percent of survey respondents between 18 and 29 years old said that they favored developing alternative sources of energy, while just 20 percent said they supported expanding fossil fuel production. Yet the majority of that same age group also supported allowing more gas and oil extraction on federal land.

The opinions hadn’t shifted much since the same survey was conducted three years ago.
