Can there be any genuine celebration of heritage without celebrating history?
Thanks to the vitriolic and weaponized immigration debate of the past decade or so, many Americans operate under the assumption that all Latinos in the United States are recent immigrants. In fact, we have lost count of the times we’ve been told to go back to our own countries, without regard for the fact that many U.S. Latino families — especially those with indigenous rather than Hispanic roots — have ties to and history in this land that predate those of English descent.

Philadelphia has long had a special connection to Maurice Sendak. The Rosenbach Museum and Library has housed the author's collection of drawings, proofs and manuscripts — more than 10,000 pieces — since the 1970s, and has hosted many exhibitions of his work over the years, including a 2009 major retrospective. But Sendak died in 2012, and the long-standing agreement the artist/writer had with the Rosenbach is being superseded by his will. Most of the Rosenbach's Sendak collection will go to Connecticut.

There was every reason for Marcell Lawrence to believe that he’d be around to see his friend Alex Guevara — who he describes as strong-willed and positive — graduate with the pediatric nursing degree he was set to start studying in the fall. Instead, on Aug. 13, Lawrence found himself holding his friend and supporting Alex’s head as the life bled out of him on the asphalt of the parking lot of the Dell Music Center where the two 20 year olds had gone together to attend a peace concert.

Yes, you read that right. NASA will pay you to stay in bed, to the tune of $170 per day. But there is a catch. You'll have to be there 24/7 for 70 days. You can play on your phone, read, play with your cat, whatever — as long as you don't get up.
